America has had 45 presidents so far, and while some put more of a stamp on the office than others, all of them had their own particular quirks. They brought different strengths and weaknesses to the role; were informed by varying ideologies, and all had a plethora of advisers and staffers around them that influenced their decisions and presidency. 

Some were fortunate in having a cooperative congress and an agreeable Supreme Court. Others dealt with split control of the government and a weak mandate, perhaps in the form of losing the popular vote or entering office due to the death of a predecessor. 

Still, others suffered the mixed blessing and curse of holding the presidency during a period of great upheaval, from the Civil War to World War II to 9/11 itself, and all sorts of crises in between including the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and the Robber Barons. All this to say that many presidents have had to endure a term with upheaval, war, conflict and the occasional success and they each handled it differently.
