Elysium or the Elysian Fields is also a concept of the afterlife that was maintained by some Greek religious and philosophical sects and cults.

Why did the rich and powerful build Elysium?

Earth is overpopulated and polluted. Most of the earth's citizens live in poverty, on the edge of starvation, and with little technology and medical care. It is the year 2154 -- Elysium sits in the Earth’s orbit so that those on Elysium can still run businesses and build industries that pollute the earth, while living a healthy, pollution-free life in Elysium.

Why is there a business for Spider, the human smuggler?

A long-running feud exists between the wealthy residents of Elysium and the citizens of Earth, who want Elysian technology to cure their medical ailments. But just being smuggled into Elysium is not enough. You need a bar code emblazoned on your arm to identify you as an Elysian citizen. Once there, you need to break into a house and use the Med-Bay before being caught by Elysian security and deported. Because the need is so large, big money can be made by people like Spider, a human smuggler.

Spider has the technicians, pilots, fuel, computers, codes, everything he needs to smuggle people into Elysium. Spider is portrayed by Wagner Moura, a Brazilian film, television, and stage actor. He achieved international fame for his portrayal of Captain Roberto Nascimento in the Elite Squad and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within. He played the lead role of Pablo Escobar in the Netflix series Narcos, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination.

Where does Max live as an adult?

Max Da Costa lives in the ruins of Los Angeles. He works at an assembly line for Armadyne Corp, a company run by CEO John Carlyle. The film's Earth-bound scenes were shot in a dump in the poor Iztapalapa district on the outskirts of Mexico City.
