Long before body piercing came to "the West," many cultures and tribes used this form of body modification not only for beautification and to identify social classes but also to symbolize maturity and accomplishments. When piercings debuted in American households, there was a certain stigma attached to the modification, but since the ending of the Second World War, its popularity increased and by 1990, it became mainstream.
