About This Quiz

Most people who think about the redneck stereotype picture southern country hillbillies who drive trucks in the mud, fix everything with duct tape and wouldn't be caught dead without a gun on their hip. The term "redneck" actually has a history that dates back to the 1800s and is steeped in a negative connotation of poor white trash and uneducated poor hill folks. The term was actually used in a more positive light by farmers and coal workers who wore red neckties to distinguish themselves from a particular political topic or to recognize union members.

In the 1970s, the term "redneck" became somewhat of a fashion term. As people embraced the clothing and lifestyle of a redneck, a class within a class was seen. There were upscale rednecks, and there were still the poor, uneducated rednecks for which most of the stereotype was born. Rednecks were having an identity boom, and people were embracing what had once been a degrading characterization.

Today we see the stereotype exploited on TV and through the music that we listen to on the radio. In fact, people have made a name for themselves on the redneck stereotype and have even become wealthy from it. Comedian Jeff Foxworthy may be best known for his comedy stylings using the term, "you might be a redneck if..." with a slew of humorous sayings. We can no longer just associate the term "redneck" with a political view or geographic location. Crack a cold one and take this quiz and we'll tell you if you're a total redneck!
